We all live our lives day to day thinking that nothing bad will happen. We never think that we will be the ones dealing with the cleanup of a house fire. Unfortunately, there are many, many families that suffer the impact of house fires each year. Last year, a close friend of mine was a victim of a house fire and since then, my life has been different. I have spent many hours researching fire prevention, causes, and teaching children about fire prevention and what to do in the case of a fire. Purchasing a brand new dining room table can be quite expensive, especially when you choose to prioritize quality over price. Consequently, it really comes as no surprise that so many homeowners are living with a dining room set that is less than ideal simply because they don't have the extra cash to invest in a new one. If you are one of these homeowners, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. This is because while you may not be able to afford a brand new table, you can make your existing table look brand new without making a large investment. Following the steps outlined below will allow you to accomplish this goal.
Supplies You Will Need
Step 1: Strip Finish
Before you can begin the process of refinishing your dining room table, you will first need to remove the existing finish. This can be done using a handheld sanding block and fine grit sandpaper. If you wish to speed the job up just a bit, you can opt for a power sander. However, you will still need to sand smaller areas by hand as a power sander simply will not fit properly into the many grooves that make up your dining room table.
Step 2: Repair Any Damage
Now that you have a clean surface to work with, you will need to repair any damage that has been done to your table over the years. The best way to do this is by filling any cracks and holes with wood putty.
When filling damaged areas with wood putty, be sure to use a putty knife that is small enough to reach deep down into the crack or hole. This will allow for the most thorough repair and ensure that your repair is able to stand up to the test of time.
Once the putty is in place, you will need to wait several hours for the putty to cure properly before you can move forward with your refinishing project. After the putty has dried completely, simply sand the surface of the repaired area until it is flush with the rest of your dining room table.
Step 3: Apply A New Finish
Now it is time to really give your dining room table a face lift by applying a fresh coat of wood stain or paint. When painting your table, be sure to always start from the top of the table and work your way down. This will prevent paint from dripping into your work space and destroying your new finish.
